Description:

Vallisneria australis 'Marmor' is regarded as a selection of the giant vallisneria; its exact origin is unknown.12 The species is native to south-eastern Australia, where it grows in mostly permanent watercourses and reservoirs.1 Molecular studies assigned plants traded as 'Marmor' to this species too, but it is doubted that all aquarium forms originate from Australia.1 One dealer also regards plants supplied as Vallisneria spiralis 'Leopard' as 'Marmor'.2

The leaves, up to approx. 1 m long, bear a pattern of short brown transverse streaks.2 Sufficient light brings out reddish-brown tones; when light is lacking, the streaked pattern disappears and the leaves tend to stay green.12 It manages without added CO₂ but grows better with it; medium light is sufficient, and a nutrient-rich substrate is beneficial.2 Via runners it forms dense stands, which belong in the background of large aquariums at least 50 cm tall.2
