Cryptocoryne wendtii 'Flamingo'

Cryptocoryne wendtii 'Flamingo' arose in cultivation; the wild form of the species comes from central to north-western Sri Lanka, where it grows in and along streams and rivers.¹ The chlorophyll-poor cultivar is regarded as a mutation from a stock of C. wendtii.³ Its leaf blades are blistered and bright reddish brown;¹ other accounts describe light to dark pink leaves that only appear when submersed.²

It grows slowly and is considered somewhat more demanding than the ordinary form.³ It only shows its typical colour under strong light; in weak light, brownish or flesh-coloured leaves with green veins have been observed.²³ It provides colourful accents in the foreground and midground and forms runners over time; in the trade it also appears as 'Pink Panther'.²
