This plant is a form of Bacopa monnieri that branches strongly by itself under water and forms compact bushes. The company Tropica lists it under the cultivar name Bacopa monnieri 'Compact'. It is also available under the trade designation “Bacopa compacta”. B. monnieri is a species distributed almost worldwide in the tropics and subtropics; we have no information about the original origin of the cultivar 'Compact'.
The plant was at first not recognised as B. monnieri, but was presented as a novelty around 2010 under the mistaken name Hedyotis salzmannii and brought onto the market. The true Hedyotis salzmannii (also known as Oldenlandia salzmannii), however, is a completely different plant that has been cultivated in aquariums since 1993 and is probably quite rare in the hobby.
Bacopa monnieri 'Compact', with its bushy growth habit and its trouble-free cultivation, is very interesting for aquascaping.
