The marble giant vallisneria is a selection of the giant vallisneria long known as Vallisneria gigantea; in the view of one dealer, plants supplied as Vallisneria spiralis 'Leopard' also belong to this cultivar.1 In 2008 molecular studies assigned the vallisnerias traded as V. gigantea, including the “Marmor” form, to Vallisneria australis; one specialist author, however, doubts that all aquarium forms come from Australia.2 The exact origin of the cultivar is not known; the species itself comes from south-eastern Australia.3
Its leaves, up to approx. 1 m long, are marked with short brown transverse dashes.1 Good light brings out reddish-brown hues, whereas in poor light the reddish streaking is lost.12 Like the other selections of the species, it is regarded as robust and straightforward; a nutrient-rich substrate is beneficial.1
