Description:

Vallisneria australis 'Curly' is a cultivar of the giant vallisneria; the designation Vallisneria gigantea 'Curly' is regarded as an erroneous name for the same plant.1 The origin of the cultivar is unknown.

The species V. australis is native to Australia and has also been introduced to several European countries.2 It was only described as a separate species in 2008, after molecular studies had separated the Australian plants from V. americana; according to these studies, the giant vallisnerias traded as V. gigantea or under cultivar names also belong to it.3 One specialist author, however, considers it very unlikely that only plants of Australian origin are kept in aquaria.3 The cultivar propagates by runners, is considered easy to keep and is also suitable for garden ponds, but does not grow emersed.
