The name Rotala verticillaris became known in the aquarium hobby because a plant was introduced from India and distributed under this name. It was cultivated emersed by aquarists in the USA and brought into flower. On the basis of its floral characters, the supposed Rotala then turned out to be Pogostemon erectus.
The true Rotala verticillaris, like Pogostemon erectus, comes from India, but has a different range there. We have no information on whether this Rotala species is in cultivation. It may be suitable as an aquarium plant. This species has narrow, whorled submersed leaves, as e.g. Rotala wallichii and R. hippuris also have.
Rotala verticillaris was described by Carl von Linné in 1771 as the first species of the genus Rotala; it is the type species of this genus.
