Nymphoides aquatica

Nymphoides aquatica is a floating heart species that occurs mainly on the coastal plain of the south-eastern US states, from southern Florida north to Delaware and Maryland and west to Texas. It inhabits shallow, slowly flowing and standing waters. In the wild it hybridises with the similar species Nymphoides cordata.

N. aquatica has long been known in the aquarium hobby and is often available commercially. Because of its thick, banana-like storage roots it is called “Bananenpflanze”, “Wasserbanane” and, in English, “Banana plant”.
