Native only to northern Australia, Limnophila brownii mostly grows emersed on wet ground and only less often in water.23 It was long included in the variable L. indica until the Australian plants were split off as a species in 1986; it differs in being more strongly hairy and in having longer flower stalks.2
Submersed, the hairy stem, often reddish brown at the nodes, bears whorls of light green pinnate leaves with hair-fine segments, which remain smaller than in similar species; in good light the shoot tips take on a bronze-brown colour.23 It grows fast when given soft water, strong light, plenty of CO₂ and good fertilisation; in moderately hard water with poor fertilisation it becomes leggy and forms only small whorls.23 Planted in groups it shows to good effect in the midground to background; it is propagated by top cuttings and occasionally by creeping runner-like shoots.3
