Lilaeopsis carolinensis is a grass-like member of the carrot family whose habitats are wet to marshy and often brackish.2 The upright leaves grow singly or a few together from the rooting nodes of a creeping, branched rhizome.2 Their tip is blunt and the upper part flattened and narrowly spatulate, whereas the base is hollow and almost circular in cross-section.23
Submersed it closely resembles L. brasiliensis, because underwater its leaves stay much shorter than on land and grow hardly taller than those of that species.23 It can be identified more reliably by its flowers and fruits, which often develop in marsh culture, than by the leaf length, which is about double in emersed plants.2 In the aquarium it grows slowly and forms a grass-like lawn in the foreground or in nano aquariums; it is propagated by runners and division. It is less widespread in the trade than L. brasiliensis.3
