Description:

The narrow-leaved variety Hygrophila polysperma 'Ceylon' has been in cultivation since 1977 and was first in trade under the name H. polysperma 'red'. It is sold by aquatic nurseries Tropica and Dennerle, amongst others.
This H. polysperma variety originates from Sri Lanka.

Just like the wider-leaved H. polysperma, this variety is a very fast grower, too, without any special requirements regarding the conditions it lives in. It also does well in a low-light environment without the addition of CO2; these conditions are even quite favourable, as H. polysperma "Ceylon" does not grow quite as fast then, which makes it easier to handle. If there is sufficient iron the leaves will assume an attractive coppery hue.

Propagation is unproblematic. Its large number of lateral shoots and its exorbitant growth rate leave the hobbyist soon clueless as to the use of the huge plant mass. Its lateral or top shoots can be cut off and pre-planted in the substrate. Rapidly growing plants may lead to a nutrient imbalance in the tank, so keep an eye on your plants and adjust your fertilising schedule accordingly.
H. polysperma "Ceylon" also grows well in its emersed form, given that it gets sufficient water and nutrients.

Its rapid growth and tendency to grow out spindly and long, H. polysperma "Ceylon" requires some maintenance effort to keep it attractive. Anyhow, it is a beautiful plant for the middle- and background, and its long narrow leaves contrast nicely against many other plant species.
