Fissidens splachnobryoides is a very widely spread moss in the Asian tropics, where it grows on moist soil, even in flowerpots. This moss was introduced into aquaristics several years ago in Singapore, and in 2006 it was identified by Prof. B.C. Tan (Singapore). The name Fissidens splachnobryoides is considered a synonym of Fissidens maceratus or F. flaccidus by various authors.
This small Fissidens forms dense low-growing mats consisting of short shoots, which is the reason why one of its vernacular names is "Doormat Moss". Under a microscope it can be seen that the margin of the leaflets is finely serrate.
Unfortunately, another small moss that does not even belong to the genus Fissidens is also sold under the name Fissidens splachnobryoides.
