Echinodorus 'Red Devil'

Echinodorus 'Red Devil' is a cultivar bred by Tomas Kaliebe of Altlandsberg, crossed from Echinodorus uruguayensis and 'Red Flame'.¹² At around 20 cm in height it remains small; submersed it forms narrow, lanceolate leaves with slightly undulate margins, coloured greenish red to red – red especially in new growth.¹² Most plants on sale are in the emersed form, with greenish, tougher leaves on longer stalks; it only produces its colourful submersed leaves once planted in the aquarium.¹

It is considered suitable for beginners; a nutrient-rich substrate and additional fertilisation promote it, and medium to strong light is recommended, which intensifies the red colouration.¹² Planted singly or in loose groups it belongs in the midground, and in large aquariums also in the foreground; thanks to its small size it also suits smaller tanks.¹
