Cabomba palaeformis is a fanwort species found in stagnant to very slow-flowing waters in Central America. There is a green and a reddish-brown colour variety in cultivation in aquaria.
The green form looks quite similar to Cabomba caroliniana. C. palaeformis is also relatively undemanding. Moreover, it is more tolerant towards higher temperatures of above 25 °C and, unlike other Cambomba species, it is especially suitable for the cultivation in medium to hard water.
