A Cabomba from south-eastern South America was described in 1880 by C. L. Spegazzini as Cabomba australis. Today this name is regarded as a synonym of Cabomba caroliniana var. caroliniana, which occurs in both North and South America.
In the aquarium hobby, however, the name Cabomba australis was also wrongly used for the yellowish fanwort (C. caroliniana var. flavida), which is native only to south-eastern South America.
