The name Anubias congensis has long been known in the aquarium hobby and the trade. The plants labelled this way, however, are probably always Anubias afzelii.
Anubias congensis, however, is a synonym of Anubias heterophylla and not of A. afzelii. The species name A. congensis refers to the Congo region in Central Africa. A. heterophylla occurs there, but not A. afzelii, which is native only to West Africa.
