Echinodorus maculatus 'Leopard' has been in cultivation since 1988. It is a mutation of E. maculatus (commonly known as E. schlueteri), which was detected among other seedlings and selectively bred in the aquatic plant nursery of Hans Barth, Dessau, Germany.
The leaves of this variety have more intensive brown spots, and the leaf blade bases of young plants show a more distinct heart shape. The brown spots on the leaves remain for a longer period of time than on the original form of E. maculatus, and growth is a little slower.
The leaf rosettes of this Echinodorus variety remain rather low and more compact and look best when used in small groups in the fore- and middleground of the aquarium.
